about

This song is not technically about the Catholic idea of Purgatory though it is playing off the premise of it. In their Purgatory, you wait, after your death, to be judged and allocated your slot in heaven or hell, happiness or eternal torture.
My Purgatory is the place some relationships go to when they appear to be breaking down but neither person can admit it.
First verse is calm, the place seems a little easier to cope with things.
Second verse, things get worse.

lyrics

Oh what a waste.
I've been here before, I know this place.
It's where we come when we need to breathe;
Purgatory.
We've come so far.
Time is long lived here.
Within the space that lies between;
Purgatory.

So here we are, there's no escaping it.
So here we are, there's no denying it.
So here we are, there's no escaping it.
Purgatory.

No taking sides.
We'll fight for position for a place to hide,
as walls of flame devour me;
Purgatory.
The raging fire
portrays the image of my desire.
My skin is burning in the heat;
Purgatory.
